One last ride/ A word of thanks

Under the weather and over matched by temperature and fatigue I accepted another ride. I had to go from Camp Verde to Prescott yesterday and decided to take the more scenic route. I had 3 flats and my pump didn't work on the valves of my replacement tubes. I was 5 miles shy of the 7,000 foot summit. My tube pressure on my rear tire was about half strength. I prayed for help. A man named Billy came along and asked me if I needed help. I felt so exhausted that I took the kind man's offer. He gave me a ride right to where I needed to go. I'm not as in good of shape as I thought I was, I'll have to ride more.

I wanted to take a moment to thank all the kind people who have given me rides, bicycles, gifts, stays at their homes. Last night while meditating, I talked to God about things, I was just chased out of a town, by a fine officer doing his duty, into the frigid wilderness. I look at our laws and the way we do things and I ask God "where is the love?" The answer, all the people who gave from their hearts and loved you with their kind words, open doors, and wonderful gifts. I know any one can make up a real bad case against me, with out much effort, but I also know about a wonderful God who provides the price for my faults. More and more this type of conversation causes negative reactions from the less fortunate people I met on the road. I told a group around the camp fire a few nights ago, I can only witness to what I've seen God do through wonderful people like yourselves. The days are getting short, we, with the love of Christ can shine like never before. I'm learning not to expect thanks, and to be ready for new trials any time I can act like my savior would, but my wonderful savior is with me, I see it every day. May God bless all of you this new year, and may He help us all through His matchless grace, bye Daniel

Merry Christmas

Hi everybody,

Thank you God for all you do. Winter has set in. Most mornings around 2 or 3 a layer of ice forms on the tent. Afternoon highs have been in the 50's and low 60's. A cold spell is coming in with rain today, snow in the higher elevations. I might get invited to Christmas eve dinner at Rick and Diane's, but it still up in the air. I've taken to trips to Cottonwood, its about a 35 mile round trip, it's good exercise and has a nice library. It looks like I'll be attending Yavapai College next month. Please pray that a place to stay will open up. Prescott is a lot cooler than the Verde Valley. Highs only around 40, and lows often in the teens. It would be difficult to stay out doors, but many people do it. I worked helping a lady clean out her garage, this provided some much needed cash. You can also pray that more of these encounters come my way. I helped her put up her Christmas display, and in return she gave me a tour of the near by city of Sedona, and took me to lunch. What a beautiful view of the world famous, spiritually renowned mecca. Thanks for stopping by, and please email me at daniel.gibbs@yahoo.com if I can pray for you, God bless and have a wonderful Christmas, Daniel

Happy Thanks Giving

I've moved down out of Prescott to lower elevation. Prescott is such a beautiful city with many kind people. I especially want to thank Rick, Diane and Jackie for there kind hospitality. So many kind organizations like Quixote's garage in Prescott. Opportunities for employment seem to be more and more difficult to find. The last week I've been camped along a beautiful stream, and have enjoyed a new neighbors company, his name is Norm. Norm is working on his GED and wants to go to truck driving school. I'm currently praying to see if I should go back to school for social work. The work is getting more and more difficult, and I'm not getting any younger. I've taken three 45 mile rides the last week or so, I feel good after a ride. Thank you for checking out the site, and may God bless you during this time of Thanks Giving, bye Daniel

NOV 2009

Hi All,

I'm still looking for work in Prescott. Like most of the country, unskilled work is hard to come by. I was sitting in a fast food establishment the other day and the police arrested the cook. Thinking this might be one of those doors God opens, I quickly asked for an application. The manager did say he would check my references.
Its been beautiful around here. Highs in the low 80's and lows around 40. I continue to get to know Rick and Diane( the nice couple letting me stay with them) They've shared their food and resources and have been so kind. I'm currently still putting out applications and working at trying to become eligible for subsidized employment opportunities.
Please continue to pray that God will lead me to the place He would have me be. Thank you for checking the site, and feel free to email me at daniel.gibbs@yahoo.con, Yours in Christ, Daniel

Cold and Snowy

The first cold air of the season has hit Prescott National Forest. Snow levels hit 4800 feet. My tent has been set up at about 5800 feet. Water has been freezing at the camp site the last few days. I had a dusting of snow which did melt at the camp site. A couple I've met has kindly offered to let me use their spare room/den to sleep in, they've been concerned about me being out in the cold. They want me to look for work, and the husband has been escorting me around town trying to guide me in the process. It gets frustrating at times. I thought I had found a part time construction job, but it didn't work out.
It's difficult for me to make the decision to try to settle down, but I've been praying for the opportunity to get back into society, so this might be it. Prescott is a pretty community, and I've met many nice people, like most places work is hard to come by, I do pray God will open the door He wants opened, and close any that are not in His will. If you read this, please pray that God will work in my heart to be sensitive to His leading, and that He will open a clear door of opportunity that I would enjoy and thrive at. Like always, if you have any prayer requests, please feel free to write at daniel.gibbs@yahoo.com

Camping in the Southern Rockies

Hi All,
What a beautiful day. I was dead set on going straight down I-10 through Phoenix, and Tuscan, and skip over this part of the country. What a mistake that would have been. It is so pleasant here. I've met some real nice people, and I have learned about an Arizona that I've never experienced. My ex pastor used to rave about his hunting experiences in Arizona, I can see why he missed it down here so much.
I was preparing to have a little coffee at he camp site when this woman came down the side of the mountain with her dog Jackie. What a shock to see her come down the side of the mountain in the middle of the forest. I offered her some coffee, and we chatted about God's love. She invited me to her house where me, her, Jackie, and her husband enjoyed the afternoon talking and sharing our faith. That evening several other family members arrived for the wedding of her daughter Kelly. They let me do a little work around their home to earn a little bit of cash, and I returned to my tent. Its so neat to meet different people from different parts of the country. I just received an email from a friend Luis from New Mexico, Luis had spent a morning driving me around his city a year and half ago, I praise God for the body of believers I've met during my journeys. Some are more spiritual than others, some have great knowledge, some have great Love, it's neat to see how God is working in their hearts. Thank you for checking the site, and please pray that God will open the doors He would have open, and close the ones he would want closed, Please feel free to email me at daniel.gibbs@yahoo.com any time, yours in Christ, Daniel

Still in Prescott

I spent the better part of the morning in a place called Quixote's Garage. Across the nation I've seen sign after sign,(No loitering, no trespassing, ect.) Chris, the manager of the place, has a card that states" loitering allowed." She lets homeless people get mail, eat, drink coffee, phone calls or even sleep on her living room furniture. When I arrived she learned of my trip and by God's grace some one had dropped off a WalMart kids tent. This is the tent I usually buy, being a great value at around $20.00 new, very light weight, and easy to put up. She was more than happy to give me the tent, and let me know where to get a better sleeping bag. This small city has such a refreshing attitude. Quite a few people have suggested I stick around here, There's a good climate, plenty of food, and some real nice people. The state even offers health insurance for homeless men, this is unheard of!
I was surfing the net and I came across a site where my journey had been discussed. I had no idea this had taken place over a year and a half ago. My mission statement states that my goal is to touch hearts for God, not just survive. The idea of going back down the mountain into a place where I have no idea where I'll be able to sleep or eat isn't necessarily appealing, but I am convinced that God will provide. I pray He will be use the sign, or my stupid bike ride to touch a few more hearts. I'll probably leave in the next couple of days.
Prayer works, please pray that God will work in my heart to do what He would have me do, and as always, please contact me a daniel.gibbs@yahoo.com if you have any prayer concerns, thanks for checking the site, and God bless, Daniel

Up in the mountains

Greetings from Prescott. What a neat city. People are friendly and it's such a pretty community. The library is modern, and I've met some real nice people. I visited a United Methodist Church where a kind lady invited me to lunch. Two couples and the single lady that invited me shared their lives and whats going around in the community and their church. As I told them, I enjoy so much getting to know people in the local communities I visit.
A very strong wind has come up, so I may suspend my journey for a day or two. There is a shelter that is allowing me to spend up to 14 nights. There seems to be plenty of places to eat. I still have some ham and buns form the church 20 miles back. I may have to have some ham tonight so it doesn't go bad. There's a lot homeless people in the area and the community seems to treat them with respect and offers them plenty of resources, praise God. I may post before I go, I'm still in prayer about the route I'm going to go, I'm leaning toward a more southern route to avoid temperatures in the 20's(at night) Elevation plays such a role with the temps. Thanks for stopping by the site, and God bless you, yours in Christ, Daniel

Cooler weather helps ride

Hi All,
Last night I was actually cool. I was riding through a town called Hope and I saw a church that had a 6:00 bible study, so I waited an hour and sat in on there meeting. There was about a dozen folks. There are not that many permanent residence around here, so 12 in a good attendance. The snow birds will be showing up now that October is here. Pastor Ron and his wife allowed me to sleep on the church porch, and gave me money for breakfast.
The cross wind which has, at times, helped me turned today and was fighting my progress. The strong North wind has cooled it off 15 degrees or so. It only in the low 90's today. I'm at the junction of my turn directly north in to the wind. I'm not looking forward to the struggle the next 80 miles or so. I'll will be going up 3000 more feet against the wind. It is going to cut in to my miles per hour a lot.
Thank you for praying about my tent. I stopped at a garage sale and bought a used tent. The zippers are froze up, and it is larger and heavier than I would like, but for 10.00 I had to try. I was able to find a Napa repair station which allowed me to use their dw40 on the zippers, I hope it will work. I've heard thunder storms are for casted for the Prescott area. I heard they have a mission where I might be able to take a much needed shower.
I must go now, I only get 30 minutes on the computer here, thanks for checking the site, and have a wonderful day, yours in Christ, Daniel

Its Hot in the Dessert

Dan's top ten list

The top ten indications that you may be in a dessert:
10 The only birds you see are dead
09 You see water that's really not there
08 You see a "Sand drifts next 7 mile" sign
07 Kind motorist stops and gives you water while you rest in the shade
06 Board border patrol ask you what in the world your doing
05 Storm drains are for sand
04 Sign states "Off the road capital of the world"
03 You drink 2 gallons of water in 3 hours
02 Gas and beer is cheaper than water
01 Price for a gallon of water is $ 4.35

On a serious note, I want to thank God and the generous people that enabled me to get this current bicycle. I also want to thank James at Holy Rollers for the large range gears, and new bearings. Along with saddle bags and other needed extras, I wouldn't want to be out here with out them.
God is so faithful. A bike and supplies are provided, the supplies are stolen, and God provides replacement. Thank you God for supplying all my needs. I'm convinced some one was praying for me when a couple stopped and gave me water yesterday. They had just bicycled across the pass, and almost ran out of water themselves and were sensitive to my need. Thank you for your prayers. Currently my zipper on my tent is not working and I'm getting bit up my dessert insects. Please pray the duct tape I'm about to buy will hold the door up at night, until I can get a new tent.
Like always, please email me at daniel.gibbs@yahoo.com with any prayer concerns.
The message for today is "Prayer changes things", thanks for visiting the site, God bless Daniel

Going in to the dessert

I've been here in Alpine for around13 days or so. A heat wave has settled in. While waiting for the weather to break, I helped out at Holy Rollers Bicycle shop. I helped land scape the yard and put up a couple of fences. I washed some bicycles and changed some tubes. The owner, James, has graciously shared his life and home with me. James put some new gears on my bike and has donated many speciality items. His room renter, Lorrie, has gave me a tour of the town, bought me lunch, and has taken me to numerous church meetings. God is good. Thank you God for my new found friendships.
Its time to move out now. I'm planning on making my way through the dessert and up to northern Arizona. Due to high temperatures and a kind offer, my bicycle is going to hitch a ride with my friend James up the road a few thousand feet. I debated if I should take the ride, but 3,000 feet in this heat(over 100 degrees) might be a better start before going down in to the dessert for 4 or 5 days.(maybe) I'll try to post when I can, pray that God will bring people He would have in my life my way, if you have any prayer concerns, please email me at daniel.gibbs@yahoo.com. Thank you for visiting the site, and God bless, Daniel

God's People

It never ceases to amaze me how God touchs peoples hearts to show compassion and love. "They will know that we are Christians because our Love."
A kind Christian business man has been kind enough to share his Home and life with me the last couple of nights. I'm waiting for bicycle parts to arrive from another kind Christian businessman. In the mean time I've been helping around the shop, going to church and meeting new friends. Yesterday a very nice Mexican American couple invited me to have indepence day dinner at their house. The couple treated us guests to a traditional Mexican Indedence day feast. What a blessing. This evening I was at a retreat center 50 miles East of San Diego with about a hundred Christians praising God. What a wonderful savior.
Thank you for checking the site, love in Christ, Daniel

Generous Christians get sign back on road

Today's sign reads, "Fueled by Grace".
A very generous couple traveled 2 hours to drop off a replacement bicycle. They also blessed me with food, clothing, and some money help. The next day, while I was out of the tent, someone took all my food, clothing, and my back pack and chair. I didn't want these people to come back looking for more, so I took it as a sign for me to get the sign back on the road. So I'm on my way towards Texas. I've been going up the Southern Sierra/Nevada foothills toward the dessert. Two very nice Bicycle shop owners have offered to let me use their couch tonight Thank you God for your provision. Thank you for checking out the site, have a wonderful night.
Yours in Christ, Daniel

God is Good

San Diego is a beautiful place. Beautiful parks, pretty sunshine, and a lot of people. My previous trip here, a year and a half ago was very short. I reluctantly took this West coast bicycle trip here. The purpose behind the trip was 3 fold, which included getting back in shape spiritually, physically, and mentally. What I've found has been a deeper relience on God.

There were several factors that helped me to make this decision to take this trip. As Romans 8 talks about, He won't leave us nor forsake us. I'm convinced that where ever I am, He can use me. It may not be in the way I would like it to be, or the way others believe it should be, but When I excepted Christ, I was put in his tool box to be used. Some people are hammers, get to preach to thousands, stay in great places and get many praises, and much respect. Many of them do much to help the cause of Christ and I praise God. Others like myself, may be an old rusty screw drivers, they say kind words to homeless people, sleep where ever and try our best to witness despite our sinful natures. I personally like the story of Mother Teressa(despite doctrine differences), who volunteered to live as the poorest of poor, refusing indulgence. She must of been a power tool.

My mission statement has always been to touch hearts for God. I've tried to accomplish this through the sign, and in other ways. Some times out of necessity I've asked for help. Most of the time some one just comes along. I've tried to keep my signs non condemning, often a little humorous, because that's how I would like to be treated. On this trip down the coast, I found a wood cross on the side of the road and attached it on the back of the bike.
Now in San Diego I'm now praying about putting the sign back on the back of the bike. Last night I went back to the camp site to see all my stuff was removed. The park workers(probably) were nice enough to leave the stuff in a pile around the corner. I found a spot along a bike trail, laid down to try to get some sleep and prayed about a possible sign. What would God have me put on this sign? Several ideas popped in my head. My longing is to encourage people to show the love and grace they want shown back.

Back to business. A very kind friend of a Christian brother has offered to come and help me fix my old bike. I get choked up when I experience this type of loving offer. This area has a large homeless population and local charities are quite stressed. This past week I've been emotional about things, I see compassion and its adversary waring so heavily. I some times feel alone not wanted by the church, and not fitting in with the normal homeless person. This type of offer for help is priceless.

Thank you for checking out the blog, and I pray God has compassion on all of us, yours in Christ, Daniel

Still Looking for Parts in San Diego

What a beautiful city. So many people outside during this past holiday week-end. I'm still having bicycle repair issues. My back rim continues to wiggle more and more. I see the belts coming through my front tire. Only my front brakes are working at this time. So I'm praying for my bike to continue working while I search out sources to get my bike fixed. I've been collecting cans to try to raise funds.

Theres over 10,000 homeless people in the San Diego area, so resources are stretched thin. Please pray for God to give me direction, for Him to open the doors, He would have open, and close the One's He would have closed. To go East from here into the desert, I will need a restored bicycle.

Thank you God for all you've done, Thank you folks for checking out the site, Yours in Christ, Daniel

30 miles to go

Its been an eventful 40 days or so, what a beautiful diverse coast from Washington to San Diego. It was hot, then cool, then cold and foggy, and now hot. Lots of fires going on down here. God has truly blessed me so many times on this journey. I now ask myself, whats next? I'm out of food, out of money, and I really don't know how my bike is still rolling down the road. I need prayer for God to open the doors He would want open, and to close the doors, He would want closed. I don't know what He would have me do next, please pray that God will lead me in the direction He would have me go, thanks for viewing the site, God bless, Dan(daniel.gibbs@yahoo.com)

Ventura Highway and the Sunshine

About 200 miles to go. I had another flat tire this morning, I'm at a man's house name Sam, I met Sam in Santa Rosa and he said when I got to Ventura to look him up. I'm still having problems with my back rim and tire, and my front tire is worn out.
I had a huge blessing from a church group Wednesday night, they paid for a motel for the night and I had money left to go to a camp ground two nights ago, and to buy a tube for my tire this morning. God is good. I'll try to update in the next 5 days . Love in Christ, Dan

MORE BACK TIRE PROBLEMS

Greetings from beautiful, sunny So Cal. Beautiful sunny day, its been very foggy. I found a cross on the side of the road and I attached it to the back of my bike. I've been looking for what God wanted there, I hope He's pleased. Please pray that I will find safe places to sleep the next 10 days. Also that my back tire issues will resolve, thanks for stopping by, Love in Christ Daniel. I think around 400 miles left, or so

3 Flat tires on the northern coast of CA

After getting a huge blessing in Cresent City, I was able to make it down to Point Arena before getting a flat two days ago. I put a new tube in and it also went flat. I changed the tire and tube and another flat. A replacement tube I had also had a flat. So now I'm going to get some green slime for my rear tire. I hope it will patch the problem my rear rim seems to be causing, things were going so smooth, oh well. Its warmer here some 20 miles or so inland.
The coast didn't have many services, very few stores, and expensive. I'm currently a library and I can see a big 5 sporting goods, I'll restock with food, fix the bike(hopefully), and head towards the golden gate, and back on the coast. Thank you for checking the site, have a great day, Love in Christ, Dan

Brotherly Love

While entering California, I got a flat tire at the Agriculture inspection. After walking 3 or 4 miles a man stopped me and asked me if I needed help. He bought me coffee, and helped me make arrangements to get my tube patched. He also gave me a contribution to help me get that back rim fixed. God is still at work in the hearts of man. There's so many people bicycling along the coast with little money, the bicycle repair man told me how stressing it is on people. As Christians, now more than ever its easy to stick out in a crowd by showing Love. Thank you God for touching the hearts you touched yesterday, thanks for checking in, have a wonderful day, yours in Christ, Daniel

Leaving Oregon

I've made it the 360 or so miles of Oregon coast. In Washington, I took a ferry boat, and a few county buses, but I either peddled or walked, up a couple steep grades, all through the Oregon coast. God is good. Thank you Lord for your provision. This is about my 4th or 5th bicycle adventure. As my 1st adventure, I've decided to read the Bible during breaks. I feel I need the strengthening of His word in my life at this time. If during prayer and meditation, I hear, put the sign up, it will be done God willing. My back rim is still out of whack, but so far its holding up. My right knee has been acting up, but other than that I'm holding up well.
I want to mention the beauty of the Oregon coast, as well as its wonderful state park system. The communities I've visited have been so friendly. Have a great day, yours in Christ, Daniel

Port Orford OR

I'm still doing good. I'm struggling to get back in shape. Up hills are still difficult for me, I have no creeper gear. My 1970's era 10 speed is having back rim problems. Please pray that God will use this journey to draw me closer to him, and that He will continue to meet my needs.( particularly to have my back rim hold up, or to provide a way to get it fixed. Weather is always cloudy, and around 60. I'll try to post as I make my way toward San Diego. Thanks for checking out the site, yours in Christ Daniel

Aug 2009

Sorry about the negative theme of my last post. Thank you however for your prayers. My kidney pain and tooth pain has gone away for now. No treatment is available, so its probably just put on the back burner, but I'm glad its there, and I'm not experiencing the pain.
I decided to take my beat up old ten speed and take it on the road from Bellingham( 20 miles from Canada) to San Diego. I tried to do this last year, but after making it to Red Wood National Park( Near Eureka CA) fires turned me back. I've made it through Washington, through the beautiful Olympic Peninsula,(Olympic National Park), and half way down the coast of Oregon. I'm currently having problems with my rear rim(bad spokes and dents) and I'm praying for a solution to this problem. I stopped at a bicycle shop, and they want at least 23 dollars to fix it. I'm heading to a mission to try to get a place to sleep tonight, then, I'll try to find some work to raise the funds to fix the bike or buy a new old one. While on the road I rarely get the urge to drink or any thing like that, please pray God continues to work on my heart and that He will provide for my needs. Thanks for stopping by, yours in Chris,Dan

July 2009 Post

It was great to hear from dan g. I remember coming across him and his group on the Appellation Trail. Life has become so different the past few years. I will attempt to answer Dan's question about whats going on and what to pray for me about. I don't like to be negative, nor do I want to be the accuser, the world has to many of them.
I'm currently in Bellingham WA. I have so much to be grateful for, thank you God for meeting my every need. I need prayer for my health, 4 teeth raughting out of my skull, I have no money to get them fixed. So please pray treatment will be made available. I've been having sharp kidney pain in my right side, and there is no treatment available at this time. So please pray for the pain to go away, or that treatment will be made available.I've struggled with a deep sense of lack of purpose and question why I'm still here on this planet. So please pray God will give me purpose and direction. Pray that I will find good friends that love the Lord and truly care about His interests, and mine as well. Please pray that the right job will be made available to me, so that I can meet my needs and regain the hope I've lost.
I thank God so much for the opportunity to travel the last few years, and for allowing me to meet so many truly wonderful people. Please pray that I can continually concentrate on the positive blessings and that I can have clear purpose. Thank you for viewing the blog, have a wonderful day, and may God bless you, bye Daniel

I just got here 3 days ago and I'm still settling down. It was very hot here the 1st 3 days, but its back to normal now, nice and cool. Late April 2009 Post

I've been working for a large fast food chain restaurant. It is hard work, and some times very stressful. The people I work with work so hard.
I've continued to search for more steady work and I've landed a 3rd shift maintanance position at a very large department store chain. They're known for very reasonable prices, who knows, this might be a fit for me.
I'm truly greatful for God's unending grace and love, and also for the continued patience of many people who are a part of my life. I start my new job Sunday night, I hope it will allow me to get back within societies norms a little closer. Have a great day, God bless Daniel

April 2009

I'll try not to be negitive. I miss experiencing the clear blessings of being out on the road. I'm being challenged with a negitive attitude, and a state of circumstances that seem bleke, and unworkable. On the road the problems I encountered were simple and God addressed them and fixed them so quickly. The issues I face daily here seem to be here to stay, and are not being fixed at all. I, like everyone, need prayer, its so hard for me to see God any where in these situations, I hope you guys have a good month, bye Dan

2/09 Post

Hi All,

I've met so many nice people over the past year or so. I'll try to post monthly to let you know whats going on in my life. Things are real bad for work in MI. I'm working at a bakery, you show up in the morning and if the res work they let some of us work. I guess, the longer your there, the better chance you have to work. Sort of a water downed Grapes of Wrath stuff. I have to thank God for the help with food that's available, and the generosity of family members. Have a good day, and you can email me at daniel.gibbs@yahoo.com

Looking for work

Cold weather has blanketed Grand Rapids. With the auto slow down its really difficult to find work. I'm in a program offered by the county that supports us in the process. The instructors have often mentioned that you better get some training if you want to live around here, but you can only get training if you have a job. Friday we start the job search part of the training. I hope to get a 2nd or 3rd shift job, then I can get up to a year training at the local tech school. I hope all is well with any one who visits the site, and may God bless you, yours in Christ

Happy New Year

I reflex back on the past year and I see God so faithful. I was in so many places biking, hiking , and thumbing. God worked through so many nice people. Back home He's allowed me to see my children twice, and I've had many reunions with other relatives. I have a warm place to stay and things to eat. My parents have graciously allowed me to stay in their home. Thank you for all you've done Lord! I'm still looking for work, and hoping for an even more compassionate world in the cumming years. I pray we as a nation can come together and truly use Christ as an example of " one nation under God". Christ came to heal, love, and forgive. I pray many of us can string together many right choices, and that the world will become a kinder, nicer place to live. Lets all try to do unto others as we would have done to ourselves, and when we fail, as I often do, I pray we all absorb The forgiveness Christ died for and that we as a people get closer to God's grace. Thank you God, and thank you Jesus for all your love, mercy, and kindness. Thanks for viewing the site, and have a wonderful new year, daniel.gibbs@yahoo.com
